Support Local Watersheds & Youth Civic Engagement

April 1-10, 2012: Earth Force, a nonprofit organization that supports environmental service-learning, seeks volunteers to help review DC middle school students' watershed-improvement project proposals for the annual Caring for Our Watersheds Youth Summit, an environmental educational competition held in conjunction with Mayor Gray's Unite for a Sustainable DC and the United Nations World Environment Day. Judges will be responsible for reviewing at least two proposals (with a flexible time frame) and joining a brief meeting (with an in-person and webinar option) to ensure proposals are ranked fairly.

Project Recycle: Barbara Chambers Children's Center

 

Are you a people person? Do you enjoy talking to complete strangers? Barbara Chambers Children's Center is seeking social-butterflies to assist them with a new project. 

 

Barbara Chambers Children's Center are hosting a Recycling Drive. They are collecting a number of used electronic items such as old cell phones, digital cameras, GPS's, etc. The Center seeks volunteers to be outposted at various locations throughout Washington, DC. Locations vary, and they are able to place volunteers where they feel most comfortable. They will provide you with a table and chair to sit, collect items, pass out flyers, talk to people, explain the program, etc. They encourage volunteers to outpost in their own neighborhoods where they know familiar faces and surroundings. 

 

The Center also needs volunteers to stand in front of the Center in Columbia Heights to remind people that donations are also accepted there. Volunteers may also be asked to canvass the neighborhoods (ONLY if they are comfortable in doing so) to ask community members to donate their used items. Volunteers who have relationships with churches in Washington DC are invited to perform outreach and ask people to donate their used items. Volunteers may be asked to stand by or inside the Metro stations to remind the public of our program. 

 

The Center would like volunteers to encourage people to donate their used items. Even if you are unable to donate time, but just happen to have a lot of techie-friends, you could still help to collect these items without actually being out in the community.

 

Note: If you volunteer with an adult, you only need to be 12 years old or older. If you volunteer by yourself, you need to be at least 18 years old.

Needs and Opportunties at A Wider Circle

Come work with A Wider Circle this Saturday, February 4th. Help move donated beds so that DC residents will have places to sleep in their homes and apartments!

This Saturday, as part of a special event with corporate partner First Finish, A Wider Circle is getting three floors of beds from a local hotel and they need volunteers to work either 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. to help them load and unload the beds.  If you want to help, please email Anne Thompson.

A Wider Circle also needs volunteers for their educational jobs programs. Here are a few ways you can help:

We are looking for a few good cooks!

We need volunteers to provide dinner for one or more classes. The classes will take place in A Wider Circle's new classroom on Tuesday evenings; dinner would need to arrive by 6:15 and serve 20-30 people.  You can provide all or part of the dinners!

Good with children?

We are also looking for volunteers to help out with childcare during classes, Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm, on-site at A Wider Circle.  Volunteers help with homework, play games, and help serve dinner to the children while their parent(s) attend(s) class.  In addition to childcare for the adult education, we will be having a formal reading program for children on Tuesday evenings, so volunteers to read with children will also be helpful.

Interested in providing one-on-one support?

We need volunteers willing to work with adults to format résumés, practice interviewing, and search for jobs during and/or outside of class time.
