The Washington Center for Aging Services(WCAS) is a long-term care nursing facility established by the D.C. Office on Aging for District residents 55years of age and older. The Center provides the elderly of D.C. with a full range of supportive, restorative and rehabilitative care in an attractive setting. WCAS is leased from the Office on Aging and managed by the Stoddard Baptist Global Care, Inc Board of Directors, a 501(c)3 corporation. We strive to:

Needs and Opportunties at A Wider Circle

Come work with A Wider Circle this Saturday, February 4th. Help move donated beds so that DC residents will have places to sleep in their homes and apartments!

This Saturday, as part of a special event with corporate partner First Finish, A Wider Circle is getting three floors of beds from a local hotel and they need volunteers to work either 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. to help them load and unload the beds.  If you want to help, please email Anne Thompson.

A Wider Circle also needs volunteers for their educational jobs programs. Here are a few ways you can help:

We are looking for a few good cooks!

We need volunteers to provide dinner for one or more classes. The classes will take place in A Wider Circle's new classroom on Tuesday evenings; dinner would need to arrive by 6:15 and serve 20-30 people.  You can provide all or part of the dinners!

Good with children?

We are also looking for volunteers to help out with childcare during classes, Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm, on-site at A Wider Circle.  Volunteers help with homework, play games, and help serve dinner to the children while their parent(s) attend(s) class.  In addition to childcare for the adult education, we will be having a formal reading program for children on Tuesday evenings, so volunteers to read with children will also be helpful.

Interested in providing one-on-one support?

We need volunteers willing to work with adults to format résumés, practice interviewing, and search for jobs during and/or outside of class time.

Support Individuals with Disabilities as a Quality Trust Volunteer

Ongoing Opportunity; Various Times   Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities (Quality Trust) serves as an independent catalyst for change in the lives of people of all ages with developmental disabilities, so they can succeed, thrive and experience full membership in the communities they choose. Volunteer in the Community for MLK Day 2012

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

The MLK Holiday is a great time to reflect on and live out Dr. King's legacy by volunteering with service projects all over the DC metro area. There are over 40 MLK Day-themed opportunities to serve the community this weekend, and you can find one that fits your interests through these search engines:

Work with Elderly District Residents at Downtown Cluster's Geriatric Day Care Center

Ring in the new year with community service! If you're interested in working with Seniors, check out DC's Geriatric Day Care Center, a community resource for DC residents located at Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church.

The Day Care Center provides seniors with many services, including classes, group activities, meals, transportation, medical care, and therapy. Affordable Housing in the District: Sarah's Circle

Sarah's Circle is an affordable housing residence and Wellness Center in Adams Morgan that provides comprehensive programs and services for very low-income seniors.

Whether you are looking for a one-day volunteer opportunity for a group or to volunteer as an individual, Sarah's Circle can accommodate your schedule and your needs. Volunteer opportunities range from serving meals to providing landscaping and painting assistance to coordinating fun and lively activities and parties for the seniors.

Build Affordable Housing with DC Habitat for Humanity

Help Habitat for Humanity build clean, affordable, energy-efficient housing to DC residents.


There are several options for service, including: 

Construction
DC Habitat builds homes and they want your help! DC Habitat’s construction crew utilizes volunteers each Wednesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., year-round. They welcome your participation whether you are an experienced builder or you don’t know a sixteen-penny nail from a spackling knife!

 
NOTE: Volunteers should only report to the construction site when they have received confirmation from DC Habitat staff (phone or email) that they are scheduled for the given date.

Office Volunteers
D.C. Habitat always needs volunteers who are willing to assist with administrative tasks in their office, such as helping with mailings, database updates and other organizational support.

Volunteer Committees
If you’re not really the hammer and nails type, consider joining one of the other volunteer groups: the Family Support Committee; the Environmental & Building Performance Commitee; or the DC Habitat Ambassadors

New volunteers must complete a short (25-30 minutes) online orientation, titled "Nuts and Bolts" before participating in any project. Find it here.
