Volunteer Now and Throughout the Summer!

Greater DC Cares

In collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department, HandsOn Greater DC Cares and other local partners, residents throughout the District will be invited out for a day of celebration in their communities! The "Beat the Streets" Movement was started to dispel violence, improve community relations and encourage citizens to live peacefully.

Music, food and games will be available at each event. The local government, the community, health and non-Profit agencies will also provide relevant services (Jobs, health screenings, aging information, mentoring services, etc.) to our District residents.  Bringing together these supporters allows access to information, applications and appointments which will help our Citizens succeed.  

Six events from May until September will be held in various neighborhoods throughout the District. Two shifts of volunteers throughout the day are requested for each event: a team to set-up (3PM - 5:30PM) and a team to break-down (5:30PM - 8PM). If you are able to stay for the entire day, we'd love to have you and invite you to enjoy the event! Volunteers will also be asked to assist in food preparation and serving, engage with residents, and to help residents find different services available at the event.

Volunteer at the One City Summit!

February 11, 2012; 8:30am to 4:30pm, Two Shifts Support a Unified DC as a One City Summit Volunteer Volunteers are the backbone of any successful event and the One City Summit is no exception. Serve DC is recruiting volunteers to serve in various capacities to ensure Summit attendees enjoy a meaningful, productive experience. Activities include setup, breakdown, registration, session support and more. Volunteers may register for the entire day, and large groups are welcome. Join the FOCUS Public Charter Leadership Council and Earn Community Service Hours!

Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS) is forming a Youth Leadership Council to help public charter students get involved in their advocacy efforts.  FOCUS invites ALL 6^th – 12^th grade D.C. public charter school students to apply to the DC Public Charter Youth Leadership Council!

The D.C. Public Charter Youth Leadership Council Members will meet with other public charter student leaders several times a year for advocacy training, hands-on outreach efforts, and to share their ideas with FOCUS about needs in the charter student community. PCYLC members will also act as youth advocates for D.C. public charter schools, with monthly opportunities to speak to public officials.

So what’s in it for you?  To start, an impressive leadership and community service experience to put on your resume, one that will come in handy when filling out college applications.  Plus, given the opportunities to speak to the Mayor and the D.C. Council directly, serving on the Public Charter Youth Leadership Council will improve your public speaking and advocacy skills.  Most importantly, this is YOUR chance to engage with your community and have your ideas be heard! 

To apply, prospective applicants must submit an application and a 300-500-word essay discussing the qualities that a good leader should possess. The selection committee will make their decisions based on experience, community involvement, school engagement, and demonstrated leadership. The application is due February 6, 2012.
