Greater DC Cares

In collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department, HandsOn Greater DC Cares and other local partners, residents throughout the District will be invited out for a day of celebration in their communities! The "Beat the Streets" Movement was started to dispel violence, improve community relations and encourage citizens to live peacefully.

Music, food and games will be available at each event. The local government, the community, health and non-Profit agencies will also provide relevant services (Jobs, health screenings, aging information, mentoring services, etc.) to our District residents.  Bringing together these supporters allows access to information, applications and appointments which will help our Citizens succeed.  

Six events from May until September will be held in various neighborhoods throughout the District. Two shifts of volunteers throughout the day are requested for each event: a team to set-up (3PM - 5:30PM) and a team to break-down (5:30PM - 8PM). If you are able to stay for the entire day, we'd love to have you and invite you to enjoy the event! Volunteers will also be asked to assist in food preparation and serving, engage with residents, and to help residents find different services available at the event.

ES games are played each Thursday and Friday during our fall season (3/29/12 - 6/2/12) and bring together over 800 kids from schools around DC.

Fields are located at school sites throughout DC, and we will try to match you with a field based on your location and mode of transportation.

Typical Day:
3:45PM Away team arrives by bus to home team's field
4:00PM Girls game kicks off
4:50PM Boys game kicks off
5:40PM Games finish and away team departs

Your Tasks:
Referee both games. A soccer/referee background is very beneficial, but not required. DC SCORES' soccer leagues are recreational and small sided (8v8) with an emphasis on sportsmanship and learning. We ask our referees to show patience and promote a fun learning experience for the players. A DC SCORES staff member will meet you at the field to provide you with a stopwatch, scorecard, whistle, and extra support.

Commitment:
Volunteer every Thursday and Friday or just when you can. We maintain a system that allows referees to be flexible with their commitments.

Age Requirements:
Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age to referee elementary school games.

Volunteer with Arts & Cultural Programs at the DC Center

The DC Center for the LGBT Community is kicking its programming into high gear and needs volunteers for CenterArts, its all-volunteer arts and culture committee. Upcoming programs include the DC Queer Theatre Festival, the National Queer Spoken Word Summit and Slam, and the OutWrite LGBT Book Fair. Kids, Cooking & Culture: Volunteer with Common Threads

Common Threads educates children on the importance of nutrition and physical well-being and fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking. Common Threads' after-school program engages low-income children 8 to 12 years old by teaching them how to cook healthy, ethnic meals while learning about their similarities and differences by preparing and sharing a nutritious meal. Common Threads is currently recruiting volunteers to support their chef instructors for their Spring Session, February through May, at five sites throughout the District. While Common Threads does ask that classroom volunteers commit to the full 10-week session, they also encourage anyone interested to contact them for more information other available opportunities.

Emmaus Services for the Aging - Grocery Bagging

Emmaus Services for the Aging 
 
Join Emmaus Services for the Aging on the third Thursday of the month to help package groceries that will be delivered to home-bound seniors. Emmaus is a local nonprofit that reaches out to build trust with seniors to provide support, advocacy and services that help them remain active, respected, and independent members of the community. 

Located in DC. Metro accessible. No minimum age. This project is accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Park View Recreation Center

Read to children at Bruce Monroe at Park View ES for an hour a week! Help stimulate involvement in the community center, and create a culture of reading for kids in the neighborhood. 

 

The Columbia Heights Neighboring program seeks engage residents on their own blocks. When everyone is involved, programs like the Reading Circle sustain themselves. This event is open to everyone, but neighbors in Columbia Heights, Petworth, Mount Pleasant and U Street are encouraged to come! Metro accessible.
